Options

Types of paving

Natural stone paving

When choosing a natural stone for paving the two main stone types used are sandstone and limestone, we find that sandstone pavers are most suited to traditional paving designs. More modern schemes lean towards limestone pavers although there is no rule set. Our most popular type of paving is Indian stone, we find it’s unique colourings and finishes leave it held in high regard for paving choices.

Concrete Paving

Concrete paving

Concrete paving is a highly versatile, yet reasonably priced paving unit. Concrete pavers are extensively used for patios, drives and public spaces across the UK. Standard concrete flags have a utilitarian appeal however various colours and textures are available to suit your specific requirements.

Porcelain Paving

Porcelain paving

Porcelain paving is most commonly used in modern outdoor areas and can make a particularly bold statement. It is available in a much wider variety of colours of paving than natural stone as it is a manufactured product. Porcelain is popular for combining indoor and outdoor living areas, whereby the pavers merge from kitchen to patio. This allows your garden to truly feel an extension of your home.

FAQs about Paving Installation

What types of paving materials are available?

Paving materials include concrete, asphalt, brick, natural stone (such as granite, limestone, and sandstone), and interlocking pavers. Each material offers different aesthetics, durability, and maintenance requirements.

How long does paving installation take?

The timeline depends on the project’s size and complexity. A typical driveway or patio can take from a few days to a couple of weeks, including preparation, installation, and curing time.

Do I need a permit for paving installation?

Permit requirements vary by location. In many areas, permits are required for large paving projects or when altering drainage patterns. It’s advisable to check local regulations or consult with your paving contractor.

How do I maintain my paved surface?

Maintenance depends on the material. Generally, regular cleaning, sealing (for materials like concrete and stone), and repairing any cracks or damage will extend the life of the paved surface. Removing weeds and preventing water pooling are also important.

Can paving be installed on an uneven surface?

Yes, but the ground must be properly prepared. This involves grading, levelling, and sometimes adding a sub-base to ensure a stable and even surface for the paving material.

What are the benefits of choosing pavers over concrete?

Pavers are more flexible, allowing for expansion and contraction without cracking. They offer a variety of design options and can be easily repaired by replacing individual pavers. Pavers also provide better drainage compared to a solid concrete slab.

Can paving be installed in cold climates?

Yes, but it’s important to choose materials that can withstand freeze-thaw cycles. Proper installation, including a well-prepared base and adequate drainage, is crucial to prevent damage from freezing and thawing.

What features can be added to a paved area?

Enhancements include decorative borders, lighting, drainage systems, permeable pavers, heating elements (for snow and ice), and landscaping features like garden beds or water features. These additions can increase both functionality and visual appeal.
